Masters Men and Collegiate Teams Take on Windy Day Three of #CXNats

Mild and dry conditions welcomed the athletes for the third day racing for the 2018 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships in Reno, Nevada.

January 11, 2018 (Reno, Nev.) – Mild and dry conditions welcomed the athletes for the third day racing for the 2018 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships in Reno, Nevada. Six masters men’s events were featured, along with two non-championship races and the Collegiate Team Relay. Blustery winds created more tactical racing through the sagebrush and steep hills of Rancho San Rafael Regional Park.

The non-championship races for men and women in the 11-22 age groups started the day’s action. Seventeen-year-old Kelton Williams (Ashton, Idaho) rode his way to a win in the men’s event in 25:00. For the women 11-22 non-championship, Petra Schmidtmann (Nederland, Colo./Van Dessel Factory Team) held off Cassidy Hickey (Parker, Colo./Prestige Imports/Porsche/Audi) for the victory in 28:01.

The Stars-and-Stripes jersey for the men’s 30-34 category was captured by Brandon Melott (Warr Acres, Okla./Bike Lab Racing Team) by completing the course in 48:23, 13 seconds ahead of Michael Larson (Bloomington, Ind./Team Handmade).

Kevin Day (Farmington, Utah/Team Endurance 360) captured the win in the men’s 35-39 category ahead of Caleb Thompson (Bayfield, Colo./Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado) in a time of 47:32.

Jake Wells (Avon, Colo./Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado) dominated the men’s 40-44 crown, hitting the line in 40:42.

Defending champion Adam Myerson (Dorchester, Mass./Cycle-Smart) sprinted to a repeat victory in the men’s 45-49 event in 47:54, one second ahead of Matt Davies (Boulder, Colo./Boulder Cycle Sport) and Paul Bonds (Deleon, Texas/SPCX pb R.K. BLACK). Davies finished second and Bonds third.

Christoph Heinrich (Salt Lake City, Utah/KUHL Cycling Team) powered to victory in the 50-54 division, winning in 47:58. Emilio Cervantes (Lake Forest, Calif.) took the men’s 55-59 victory, crossing the line in 41:50.

In the Collegiate 4x4 Lap Team Relay events, University of Arizona won the Club race ahead of University of Vermont in a time of 32:43. Arizona also took the Omnium competition for Club teams. Brevard College took the Varsity title for second straight year, in 28:22. Marian University captured the Omnium for Varsity teams.
