COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Springs, a prized destination for elite cycling events during the last four decades, will host another this summer, when some 800 athletes will come to Olympic City USA for the USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships, August 8-11.
The Colorado Springs Sports Corporation will partner with USA Cycling to host this elite race, part of the 2019 USA Cycling National Championships schedule.
“The Sports Corp is delighted to team up with USA Cycling to stage another elite event that enhances the city’s legacy of amateur and professional sporting events,” said Tom Osborne, President and CEO.
The Road Race will take place at the United States Air Force Academy, utilizing part of the famed 1986 UCI World Championships course and will also serve as a qualifying event for the 2019 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Poland.
The Criterium will be staged at Banning Lewis Ranch, east of Colorado Springs, and will include a neighborhood festival, live concert as a part of the Banning Lewis Ranch Summer Concert Series, food vendors and more. "We are honored to showcase our Banning Lewis Ranch neighborhood to the USA Cycling athletes and local residents for this event of national prominence." said Thomas Garmong, Banning Lewis Ranch Executive Vice President.
Criterium and Time Trial participants will battle it out with Pikes Peak-America’s Mountain in the background to create lifetime memories. Additionally, new for 2019, USA Cycling will offer a certified 20k and 40k time trial course on Hanover Highway/Myers Rd. (south of Colorado Springs), perfect for setting new national records.
Masters racers will be over 35 years old and some will be competing in their late eighties, according to USA Cycling’s National Events Manager Shawn Brett.
“We’re excited to work with the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation to host our Masters Road Nationals. This year’s event will test participants with the altitude but reward them with the breathtaking scenery,” said Chuck Hodge, USA Cycling’s Chief of Racing and Events.
