Coaching Program - August Update

By: Jon Tarkington  July 28, 2022

The USA Cycling Coaching Summit returns November 10th - 12th, 2022. Cost, Tentative Schedule, and Registration will be available later this month. This will be a hybrid event with both in-person and virtual options.

New for 2022, A Level 1 and Level 2 clinic will be held the day prior to the Summit. These clinics will involve remote learning outside the Clinic prior to taking their respective exams.

As you may be aware of, our coaching and development program has not seen any large-scale changes in over 20 years. As USA Cycling evaluates different opportunities to grow the sport, this program is likely to see a significant transformation. Some of these changes may be slow over a number of years. There may also be the chance for coaches to be involved with a program overhaul if a shorter-duration project is approved. Stay tuned for more information this fall and winter!

CEU's on hold!

Historically, the coaching program's Continuing Education Units (CEU's) have existed to mandate professional development and charge an additional fee to those who do not engage in continuing education . Due to technology and staffing issues those CEUs have not be accurately tracked for several years. CEU's have historically been tracked by hand and through our "legacy" database. That database is scheduled to be sunset at the end of 2022. Incorporating the legacy CEU's to the new database would be extremely costly. Additionally, with a complete program overhaul being planned in the near future the change would only provide a short term solution at a high overhead cost. As a result, the CEU portion of the program is suspended until further notice.

However, the professional development that CEU's were designed to mandate is still strongly encouraged. For most coaches, the desire for knowledge should be something that is nearly insatiable. Please keep consuming content from our partners at Fast Talk Labs as those learning options provide a digital record of completion that can be used in future curriculum requirements. As the USAC Coaching Development and Education program continues to evolve, expect to be connected to more trustworthy, curated content to help you reach your peak potential as a coach.

Our next quarterly conversation will be just that, a conversation and professional development session to be held Wednesday August 24th at 11am MST. We will review a hypothetical coaching problem and breakout into small groups to discuss solutions. Additionally, there will be a program update and open floor. It's a great chance to connect with other coaches before the Summit in November!
