ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Only one more day remains of the 2021 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships. Temperatures reached 97 degrees as racers took to the 52.5-kilometer course on the penultimate day of road nationals.
The Men's 65-69 category kicked the morning off. The race ended in a sprint finish where Tom Bain (San Antonio, Texas; GeriAtrix) took the win. In the Men's 70-74 race, Wayne Watson (Denver, Colo.; Chalet/Celebrity) rode into the finish solo after distancing himself from a small chase group by nearly 30-seconds.
During the Men's 75-79 wave, John Elgart (Sacramento, Calif.; Sacramento Wheelmen) had a strong performance after breaking away from the main pack. He finished over 5-minutes ahead of his competitors. In the Men's 80-84 race, Stan Swallow (American Fork, Utah; Team Endurance 360) continued his reign of dominance and took home the stars and stripes jersey.
Frederic Schmid (Waco, Texas; GeriAtrix) finished in a time of 2:13:51 and snagged the win in the Men's 85-89 division.
The Men's 45-49 wave had one of the largest fields of the day. Chad Cagle (Jenks, Okla.; Team Topeca) outperformed the competition and took the win in a sprint against three other riders. Patrick Warner (Boulder, Colo.; Stages Cycling) finished out the morning session by taking the win in the Men's 50-54 group.
During the evening session, the Men's 55-59 wave took to the course. Brendan Sullivan (Atlanta, Ga.; There's A Train Coming) took gold after a strong performance. He ended up finishing 40-seconds ahead of second place.
In the last race of the day, Joseph Foster (Alamo, Calif.; Thirsty Bear Cycling) took in the win in the Men's 60-64 category.
Racing concludes Sunday where the Criterium will be contested at Balloon Fiesta Park.
